IES San Juan de Dios in Medina Sidonia promotes the restoration of public paths through agricultural vocational education, sustainability and service-learning.
Since 2022, IES San Juan de Dios in Medina Sidonia, Cádiz, has been developing the Senderos Project, an initiative that enables students in agricultural vocational education and training (VET) to apply their skills to the restoration and improvement of the local natural environment.
Students take part in activities such as clearing and maintaining paths, installing route signs, landscape restoration, tree planting and installing nest boxes. These practical tasks help protect biodiversity and enhance the municipality’s natural and rural heritage.
The project follows a service-learning approach, combining practical education with action to address real community needs. The school works alongside Medina Sidonia Town Council and several local associations.
One of its most recent achievements was the opening of the Cerro de las Madres Trail in April 2026. This circular route, with several alternative sections, brings the area’s natural heritage closer to residents and visitors. Another milestone was the restoration of the Hijuela de las Ratas–Camino Nariga–Padrón del Cernícalo trail, opened in 2024.
The Senderos Project demonstrates how agricultural VET can contribute to sustainability, nature conservation and local development, while helping students develop professional skills and a strong sense of community responsibility.
