Likteņdārzs (The Garden of Destiny) is a unique memorial site and a symbol of Latvia’s national resilience. Located on an island in the Daugava River, it is being created as a gift to the nation – a place where history, nature, and art intertwine to honor those lost to Latvia in the 20th century while looking toward a hopeful future.

During a recent volunteer workday, assistants from Bulduri worked shoulder to shoulder in groups. Our delegation included students and educators from the 4th-year “Horticulture Technician” and “Arborist (Tree Care)” programs. It was a magnificent day to prune and shape apple trees, applying practical skills in one of Latvia’s most beautiful and meaningful locations.

As part of the Erasmus+ program, 4th-year Horticulture Technician students from Bulduri Technical School are undertaking an internship at a Dutch company, mastering plant logistics processes. Their daily tasks involve managing the flow of plants from delivery trucks to the warehouse, ensuring precise labeling and sorting, and applying their theoretical knowledge of Latin nomenclature to independently assemble customer orders. Alongside honing professional skills at the heart of the European horticulture industry, the students are broadening their horizons by exploring the canals of Amsterdam and the urban culture of Enschede, integrating international experience into their journey toward becoming competitive industry specialists.

A Landscape Construction Technician at Bulduri Technical School is a true master in whose hands natural materials are transformed into functional and aesthetic environments.

Today’s learning focus at the school is on small architectural forms. From their very first year, Bulduri students purposefully bridge theory and practice—moving from spatial planning to engineering solutions—learning exactly how design elements function within a garden setting. The ability to understand environmental needs, generate ideas, and realize them with one’s own hands represents the modern green skills taught at the technical school. These skills provide immediate added value and serve as a solid foundation for our students’ future careers.

Horticulture Technician students of Bulduri Technical School visited one of Latvia’s most modern greenhouse complexes, where they gained firsthand assurance regarding the availability of local produce for the upcoming season and explored the role of the latest technologies in the modern horticulture business. Under the guidance of the facility’s management, the students studied how innovative engineering solutions and “green skills” ensure an efficient plant cultivation process in practice, providing future specialists with valuable insight into the daily operations of industry leaders while reinforcing theoretical knowledge in a real, high-tech work environment.
